The Hot summer weather is upon us, and we’re betting you’re wondering how you can beat the summer heat.
If your first thought turns to Air conditioning, you’re not alone. But with the push to go green, and energy costs rising, the expense can be one you’re wanting to avoid. So, we thought we’d share a few “pocket book friendly tips” on how you can help to keep the interior of your home a bit cooler this summer.
- Install room darkening window coverings to help block out the rays of the sun.
- Keeping interior doors closed to all rooms in the home helps to prevent the warmer air from south facing rooms being shared with the cooler interior rooms.
- Close all exterior windows and screen doors once the early morning air begins to warm up, then open them wide in the later evening and leave them open for the night.
- When possible, cook outdoors to avoid using heat sources inside the home.
- If you happen to have a large outdoor patio umbrella, and it is at all possible. Strategically place it & open it up to shade any south facing doors or windows during the hottest part of the day.
- Finally, a little trick our grandma taught us. By Block Ice, not cubed. Place the block of ice in a large bowl, and set a fan behind it, turn it on and allow it to blow across the ice. This creates a cooling effect, similar to the wind blowing across … dare we use the four letter S word in July ??!! … snow.
While these tips won’t have the same cooling effect as an A/C unit, they can help to keep your home’s interior temperature a bit more comfortable during the hottest days of summer.
Sincerely,
The Rosts
